Are there any circumstances that could influence the measurement results of a body analysis?

Besides fundamental fluctuations in daily measurement values, fluctuations may also arise due to changes in the water content due to the consumption of food and liquids, menstruation, illness, exercise, and bathing.

Implausible results may occur among

  • persons with fever, edema, or osteoporosis
  • persons in dialysis treatment
  • persons taking cardiovascular medicines
  • pregnant women
  • athletes with intensive training exceeding 10 hours each week and a resting pulse rate of less than 60/min
  • professional athletes and body builders
  • youth under the age of 17
  • persons of the Asian and African population group.

Why is it recommended to perform body analysis in the evening?

The human body may lose as much as 2-3 kg of body water while sleeping. Therefore, the body is usually dehydrated (lacking water) immediately after getting up in the morning. However, the lower the body water content, the higher the body resistance; therefore, the calculated body fat content is also higher while the calculated muscle mass is reduced. But the body’s water content is replenished throughout the day and the measurement values normalize.

While regular weighing is recommended immediately after getting up in the morning, body analysis should be performed in the evening. The time between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. is usually best for body analysis. In order to receive comparable measurement values, measurements should always be performed under the same conditions whenever possible.

What is a bio impedance analysis?

The bio impedance analysis (BIA) is the common measurement method among body analysis scales. It doesn’t measure body values like body fat, body water, and muscle mass directly but by measuring the body’s electronic resistance (impedance). The scale then uses a statistical process to calculate the respective body masses based on personal values (body height, age, and sex), determined weight, and measured body resistance.

The body mass information provided by the bio impedance measurement method can fluctuate during the course of a day. This is not due to an imprecision of the body analysis scales, but rather due to the fluctuations of the body's water content.

Why don’t electronic scales have an adjustment wheel for the “0”-position?

Only analogue scales must be set to “0” with an adjustment wheel. Electronic scales reset to zero automatically. Due to the automatic 0-position, you shouldn’t move electronic scales for 3 minutes prior to weighing.

Why should a personal scale always be operated at the same location?

Scales are precision instruments and therefore react to changes in the environment. Different floor coverings and air temperature and humidity variations may lead to a distortion of the weighing results. Soft or high-pile floor coverings influence the measurement results particularly strongly.

Always ensure a secure, horizontal position of the scale on a hard surface, e.g. hardwood floor or tiles. Never place the scale directly in front of a wall but at a distance of at least 30 cm to the wall. This will prevent an unbalanced load on the scale during the weighing process.

Are calibrated scales more precise?

The precision of a scale has nothing to do with whether the scale is calibrated or not. It’s possible to confuse calibration with adjustment. It is even possible that an uncalibrated scale may show more precise results than a calibrated scale.

The calibration is only an official confirmation of the fact that the tolerance values of the scale are within the legally permitted range. It is mandatory only for retail scales and medical scales. A calibration must be repeated periodically.

Why do I have a different weight on different scales?

It’s not as if the scales were imprecise—just the opposite—but each scale has a minor tolerance value, as does any measurement tool. So it’s very likely that your scale at home shows a different value than the scale at the doctor's office or fitness studio.

In order to have a concise weight trend, you should therefore always use the same scale.

Does the time of day at which I weigh myself matter?

The body weight of an adult may change by 2-3 kg during the course of one day.

For a reliable weight control it is therefore important to maintain constant weighing conditions.

The most uniform results are achieved by weighing oneself at the same time, without clothing, and sober. So the best time of day would be in the morning, after getting up and using the toilet.

If you weigh yourself in the evening or during the day, the ever changing consumption of food and liquid can negatively influence the weighing results.

This applies to the weighing process with a mechanical or electronic personal scale, but not to body analysis scales.

Does daily weighing make sense?

A person wanting to lose weight cannot do without daily weight control: The healthy way to lose weight is in small steps. But regular weighing will be beneficial even when it comes to maintaining one’s weight in order to counteract any possible weight increase in a timely manner.

The values shown by my scale sometimes vary. What is the tolerance?

Like any measuring instrument, scales can have tolerances.
The tolerance is not more than 3 increments of the actual weight value. The smaller the increments, the lower the possible deviation. In other words, the accuracy variation, in the case of personal scales with a 100 g incremental display, is less than 0.5% in the average body weight range.

For example, digital personal scales have a smaller degree of deviation than analog personal scales, due to the more precise graduations.

How often should I take a reading with Soehnle body fat measuring devices?

It's really up to you. However, we recommend that you always measure at the same time of day, in the same conditions. For an accurate reading, you should measure 2 to 3 times a day and work out the average. Remember that what you eat and drink in the course of the day and your individual lifestyle will affect your water balance. This is reflected by the body fat measuring device in the form of fluctuations in the body fat percentage readings.

Is it possible to see a percentage body fat change right from Day One?

It is certainly possible for the body fat measuring device to indicate different values. This is due to changes in your water balance in the course of a day. Changes to the body fat percentage take place very slowly as a rule - over a few days or weeks.

Factors influencing the results

Analysis is based on the measurement of the body's electrical resistance. The water content in the lean mass and the proportion of body fat and muscle affect measurement results. Eating and drinking habits during the course of the day and individual lifestyle affect the water balance. This is noticeable due to fluctuations in body water and body fat percentage readings.

fold faq

Other factors can affect water balance too:

• After a bath, the body fat reading may be too low and the body water reading too high.
• After a meal, readings can be higher.
• Women may experience fluctuations due to the menstrual cycle.
• Loss of water caused by illness or after physical activity (sport). After exercise you should wait 6 to 8 hours before measuring your body fat percentage again. It is important to always to measure yourself under the same conditions.

Varying or implausible results can occur in the case of:

• Persons with a high temperature, symptoms of oedema or osteoporosis
• Persons on dialysis treatment
• Persons taking cardiovascular medicine
• Pregnant women
• Athletes who undertake more than 10 hours of intensive training per week and have a resting pulse rate of under 60/min
• Competitive athletes and body builders.

The tare function

The tare function for modern domestic scales is an essential feature in the modern kitchen. It allows you to weigh the ingredients of an entire recipe one after the other in one single vessel - without the need for calculations.

On analog scales, first place any vessel on the platform and set the scale to zero. Then weigh your first ingredient.
Reset the scale to zero. Weigh the next ingredient.
Reset to zero and so on.

The automatic zero setting function of electronic scales allows you to weigh your ingredients with any vessel of your choice.
Place vessel on platform. Switch on.
Wait for automatic zero setting.
Weigh first ingredient.
Press button and wait for zero setting.
Add further ingredients.
Press button once more and so on.
