Personal Scales
fold faq My scale sometimes displays different values. What is the tolerance level?

Tolerances are normal for measuring tools.
With personal scales, there are also deviations between the measured and the actual weight.
With a Soehnle personal scale, however, you can be certain that the deviations are extremely low: 0.3 percent for low body weight and a maximum of 1.4 percent for very high body weight.

Category: Personal Scales
fold faq Do Soehnle personal scales or kitchen scales bear official calibration stamps?

No. However, they are tested to the same standards as officially stamped scales.

fold faq The message "lo" or "bat" is displayed. What should I do?

"lo" or "bat" is displayed, when the batteries are almost empty.

Insert a new batteries.

fold faq I inserted a new battery, but the scale does not react.

Check the battery capacity. If it is definitely not a battery problem, it may be a software error.

Because the cost of a repair generally exceeds the purchase cost of a new scale, Soehnle does not offer a repair service.

Within the warranty period, your scale will be replaced by a new one. Please take the scale back to your retailer store in the country of use, with your purchase receipt and the guarantee card.

fold faq Are calibrated scales more precise?

The precision of a scale has nothing to do with whether the scale is calibrated or not. It’s possible to confuse calibration with adjustment. It is even possible that an uncalibrated scale may show more precise results than a calibrated scale.

The calibration is only an official confirmation of the fact that the tolerance values of the scale are within the legally permitted range. It is mandatory only for retail scales and medical scales. A calibration must be repeated periodically.

fold faq Why don’t electronic scales have an adjustment wheel for the “0”-position?

Only analogue scales must be set to “0” with an adjustment wheel. Electronic scales reset to zero automatically. Due to the automatic 0-position, you shouldn’t move electronic scales for 3 minutes prior to weighing.

fold faq Does daily weighing make sense?

A person wanting to lose weight cannot do without daily weight control: The healthy way to lose weight is in small steps. But regular weighing will be beneficial even when it comes to maintaining one’s weight in order to counteract any possible weight increase in a timely manner.

fold faq Does the time of day at which I weigh myself matter?

The body weight of an adult may change by 2-3 kg during the course of one day. For a reliable weight control it is therefore important to maintain constant weighing conditions.

The most uniform results are achieved by weighing oneself at the same time, without clothing, and sober. So the best time of day would be in the morning, after getting up and using the toilet.

If you weigh yourself in the evening or during the day, the ever changing consumption of food and liquid can negatively influence the weighing results.

This applies to the weighing process with a mechanical or electronic personal scale, but not to body analysis scales.

Category: Personal Scales
fold faq Why do I have a different weight on different scales?

It’s not as if the scales were imprecise—just the opposite—but each scale has a minor tolerance value, as does any measurement tool. So it’s very likely that your scale at home shows a different value than the scale at the doctor's office or fitness studio.

In order to have a concise weight trend, you should therefore always use the same scale.

fold faq Why should a personal scale always be operated at the same location?

Scales are precision instruments and therefore react to changes in the environment. Different floor coverings and air temperature and humidity variations may lead to a distortion of the weighing results. Soft or high-pile floor coverings influence the measurement results particularly strongly.

Always ensure a secure, horizontal position of the scale on a hard surface, e.g. hardwood floor or tiles. Never place the scale directly in front of a wall but at a distance of at least 30 cm to the wall. This will prevent an unbalanced load on the scale during the weighing process.

fold faq How important is the actual weight value when judging weight changes?

Weight reduction – anyone who has started a diet will confirm this – goes in small steps. And it is these small steps which a scales must be able to show reliably. For this reason it is the reproducibility of a weighing measurement which is more important.

If one also pays attention to a few simple rules for controlling body weight then the best results will be obtained.
Please note that personal scales only show reliable results from a weight of 10 kg upwards.

fold faq What is the right way to weighing?

Regularly
A person wanting to lose weight cannot do without daily weight control: The healthy way to lose weight is in small steps. But regular weighing will be beneficial even when it comes to maintaining one’s weight in order to counteract any possible weight increase in a timely manner.

Several rules should be observed to achieve a sensible weight control, which we will explain below:

Always at the same time:
In the morning, sober, and without clothing
The body weight of an adult may change by 2-3 kg during the course of one day. For a reliable weight control it is therefore important to maintain constant weighing conditions.

The most uniform results are achieved by weighing oneself at the same time, without clothing, and sober. So the best time of day would be in the morning, after getting up and using the toilet.

The weighing process
Only analogue scales must be set to "0" with an adjustment wheel, while electronic scales reset to zero automatically. Due to the automatic 0-position, you shouldn't move electronic scales for 3 minutes prior to weighing.

So, several rules should be observed for proper weighing.
However, the weighing process itself is child’s play:
Step on the scale and balance your body weight evenly.
Stand still and do not hold on to anything for support.
Read your body weight.

Body analysis scales come with their own rules
The bio impedance analysis (BIA) is the common measurement method among body analysis scales. It doesn’t measure body values like body fat, body water, and muscle mass directly but by measuring the body’s electronic resistance (impedance). The scale then uses a statistical process to calculate the respective body masses based on personal values (body height, age, and sex), determined weight, and measured body resistance.

The body mass information provided by the bio impedance measurement method can fluctuate during the course of a day. This is not due to an imprecision of the body analysis scales, but rather due to the fluctuations of the body's water content.

Best in the evenings
The human body may lose as much as 2-3 kg of body water while sleeping. Therefore, the body is usually dehydrated (lacking water) immediately after getting up in the morning. However, the lower the body water content, the higher the body resistance; therefore, the calculated body fat content is also higher while the calculated muscle mass is reduced. But the body’s water content is replenished throughout the day and the measurement values normalize.

While regular weighing is recommended immediately after getting up in the morning, body analysis should be performed in the evening. The time between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. is usually best for body analysis. In order to receive comparable measurement values, the measurements should always be performed under the same conditions whenever possible.

Other circumstances that could influence the measurement results

Besides fundamental fluctuations in daily measurement values, fluctuations may also arise due to changes in the water content due to the consumption of food and liquids, menstruation, illness, exercise, and bathing.

Implausible results may occur among
• persons with fever, edema, or osteoporosis
• persons in dialysis treatment
• persons taking cardiovascular medicines
• pregnant women
• athletes with intensive training exceeding 10 hours each week and a resting pulse rate of less than 60/min
• professional athletes and body builders
• youth under the age of 17
• persons of the Asian and African population group.

Personal Scales with Internet Connectivity
fold faq How does a body analysis scale with internet access work?

Your measured body values (weight, fat, water, and muscle mass) are transmitted to the fitness portal immediately while weighing. In your personal account you will at any time have access to your measured values, which are represented in concise curves and tables, via Smartphone, Tablet, or PC.

fold faq Where is the ideal place for my body analysis scale with internet access?

Your body analysis scale with internet access works best on a level and solid surface. Soft carpets may distort the measurement results.

fold faq What do I need for start-up operation?

You need:

1. A broadband router with one free LAN port (10 Mbit/s) and internet access.

2. One electrical connection for the electric power supply of the web box.

3. An internet capable device (e.g. Smartphone, Tablet or PC/MAC) with a web browser of the newest generation. Software or app installation is not required!

4. Valid email address for registration on the portal.

fold faq What does Bio Impedance Analysis mean?

Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) is the most precise measurement method in connection with body analysis scales. Body values like fat, water, and muscle mass are measured based on resistance (impedance), meaning the conductivity of the body. A short, electrical signal, which cannot be felt, is passed through the body via four electrode surfaces on the platform of the scale.

The individual types of tissue each have a different conductivity: body fat has little conductivity, while muscles-due to their high water content-have excellent conductivity. Due to these different levels of resistance it is possible to precisely specify the water content, muscle and fat content in connection with personal data like age, body height, gender, and the determined weight.

fold faq What do I need to observe during Bio Impedance Measurement?

For Bio Impedance Measurement, a very weak electrical current, which cannot be felt, is passed through the body for a very short time. On principle this is completely harmless, with a few exceptions.

The following devices may NOT be used together with a body analysis scale as their functionality might thus be limited:

- electronic medical devices (e.g. pacemakers)
- electronic life-support systems (e.g. life-support machine)
- portable, electronic medical devices (e.g. electrocardiographs)

fold faq How and when should I perform a body analysis?

You will receive meaningful measurement results if you weigh yourself periodically at nearly the same time and undressed, if possible. For reliable measurement results, the scale should not be moved for three minutes prior to weighing. Stand on the scale with bare feet and symmetrically. An uneven load may distort the measurement result. Stand still and do not support yourself. It is best to always weigh yourself at the same location, since different floor, temperature, or humidity conditions can cause inaccurate results.

You will obtain the best comparison values with a body analysis between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

fold faq Why is a body analysis important for me?

Body weight and body mass index (BMI) alone do not provide meaningful information regarding physical fitness or nutritional status. A balanced fat and water content, on the other hand, is the foundation for increasing your fitness level.

A Soehnle body analysis scale determines these body values, provides concise analyses, and presents them in a concise manner.

Values recommended by health experts

* Based on NIH/WHO BMI guidelines (USA National Institute of Health/World Health Organisation).

fold faq What does BMI mean?

The body mass index is a key indicator that is calculated based on the body weight in connection with the body height (body weight divided by body height in centimetres squared).

The BMI is only a reference value to determine the weight category (normal weight, underweight, overweight). Additional factors, e.g. age and gender, must be added for an enhanced interpretation.

fold faq Why can measured body values fluctuate during the course of the day?

The measurement results of a body analysis scale may provide different results based on the time of day. This is caused by the mechanism of the Bio Impedance Analysis and is not a sign of a malfunction of the scale.

Rather, such are caused by fluctuations in the water content of the body. The human body can lose up to 3 kg of liquid during sleep and is usually dehydrated in the morning after waking up. The water reserves are refilled during the course of the day.

For meaningful results, it is therefore recommended that a body analysis be performed in the evening (best between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.).

Besides these normal fluctuations, different results can also be caused due to changes in the water content based on diet, consumption of liquids, menstruation, illness, exercise, and bathing.

Distorted results can also occur in

- persons with fever, oedema or osteoporosis
- persons in dialysis treatment
- persons taking cardiovascular medication
- pregnant women
- persons under the age of 17
- persons of Asian and African origin

fold faq Why should I pay attention to my muscle mass?

The skeletal muscles support and move the body on the one hand while on the other hand they are one of the body’s most important metabolic organs because they turn calories into energy. Muscles are also an important water reservoir in the body. Targeted muscle exercise stabilizes the body and affects not only the metabolism positively, but also the glucose and hormone balance in the body. Exercised muscles also help shape a firm body, keep the body young longer, and prevent pain in the musculoskeletal system.

fold faq What is the significance of body water for the organism?

Body water means all water contained in all body fluids. All cells require water to fulfil their functions optimally. Sufficient body water content enables better cell regeneration and optimizes blood plasma. The body water content commonly fluctuates during the course of the day due to meals, physical activity, or illness. A higher body fat content automatically causes lower body water content, as fat-unlike muscles-cannot store water. Already 1% less body water can cause a 10% reduction in performance. More precise information regarding the body water content is best obtained based on long-term monitoring, for example with the help of a bloody analysis scale.

fold faq What body fat content is ideal?

Body fat has important tasks in the body: it protects the organs and joints and is an important reservoir for energy and vitamins. It also transports hormones, regulates our heat balance, and stabilizes the immune system. The optimum body fat content depends on individual factors, e.g. age, gender, and physical structure. Periodic monitoring is recommended for a healthy balance between fat and muscle mass.

fold faq What is the influence of age and gender on body values?

Optimum body values depend on several personal factors, particularly age and gender. The body fat and body water content as well as muscle mass is different for men and women and also changes with increased age. Diet, physical activity, and targeted exercise however can have a positive influence on these factors. A body analysis scale uses age and gender as a basis to determine actual as well as ideal body values.

fold faq What can I do against the so-called “yo-yo effect”?

The undesired and quick weight gain after diets is a much observed phenomenon. For the body, diets initially indicate an “emergency program” to which it adjusts with a lower calorie requirement. Muscle mass is reduced before fat reserves are used. Vice versa, with a normal diet the body first restores fat reserves and the feared “yo-yo effect” occurs.

Exercise, particularly targeted muscle training, increases the daily calorie requirement, counters muscle loss, and brings body values back into balance.

fold faq How do I care for my body analysis scale with internet access?

Your scale does not need any particular care. It is best to remove dust and dirt with a damp cloth. Do not use any corrosive or abrasive cleaning agents, which can cause permanent damage to your scale.

fold faq Where can I find more information?

Short, printed instructions are enclosed with each body analysis scale, where you can find the most important information. Extensive operating instructions are available for download at my.soehnle.com/manual for all other questions regarding safety, start-up operation, and use. If you do not find an answer for your question, our consumer service will be happy to assist you:

For written inquiries we recommend using our contact form at the SOEHNLE website www.soehnle.com where you will also find the contact addresses of the SOEHNLE representative office for your country.

fold faq Why does the sum of all determined body values result in more than 100 per cent?

Absolute values are determined while measuring the proportion of body fat, muscles and water content. As fat and muscle cells also consist of a certain percentage rate of water, this water content is in principle counted twice. The value over 100 per cent, which is the result of the addition, is variable as the water content changes when increasing or decreasing fat or muscle cells*.

*(Fat cells have a water content of approx. 25 per cent, muscle cells on the other hand contain approx. 75 per cent water.)

fold faq How do you set up additional users?

Overall, up to 8 different persons can be registered as users for each scale, whereas each individual registration is similar to a first registration. Every user requires a valid email address as well as the ID number of the scale and the web box in order to set up an individual account; this information must be provided during registration. You can find detailed instructions at (my.soehnle.com/manual).

fold faq Why are measured values occasionally not displayed in the personal account?

It might not be possible to clearly allocate measured values (e.g. if the values differ greatly from the last measured value) if several persons are linked to one scale. In this case you will see a note directly on the start page of your personal account. When you click on this note you will be taken to a table view of the measured values that cannot be allocated. There you will be able to either allocate the values to your personal profile or discard them.

fold faq The message "lo" or "bat" is displayed.

Due to the automatic 0-position, you shouldn’t move electronic scales for 3 minutes prior to weighing.

fold faq What is the right way to weighing?

Important weighing rules

Make sure the scales stand horizontally on a flat surface.
Always adjust the weight to zero before weighing.

Add-and-weigh

Adding and weighing is one function, which in the meantime has become indispensable in the modern household scales. With this function you can weigh the whole recipe one ingredient after another in a single container
– without complicated calculations
– using any kind of container.

With analogue scales with addandweigh function

  • place a suitable container on the platform and
  • adjust scale to zero
  • then weigh the first ingredient
  • return scale to zero again
  • weigh the next ingredient
  • return to the zero position, etc.

With electronic scales
the automaticzeroing function means that you can weigh using any kind of container:

  •  place vessel on the platform
  • turn on
  • wait for the automatic zeroing
  • weigh first ingredient
  • press button and wait for zero
  • add further ingredients
  • press button again – etc.
fold faq How do I change my kitchen scale from lb/oz to kg/g?

Depending on the model, the switch on your digital kitchen scale is either

  •  integrated into the ON/OFF switch, or
  •  on the top of the scale, or
  •  in the battery compartment, or
  •  on the underside of the scale.

 To change over your scale:

  •  First, switch off the scale.
  •  Hold down the ON button for 10 seconds (to clear the memory).
  •  Press the ON button briefly (the display switches to kg/g).
  •  Hold down the ON button for 10 seconds (to reactivate the memory).
fold faq Why is knowledge regarding the nutritional values of our foods important?

Let’s be aware of this: food is the only “energy source” for our body.
While we pay meticulous attention that we use precisely the right fuel for our automobiles, we take a more relaxed approach when it comes to our food.
A balanced, healthy diet, however, is important and in this regard so is the knowledge of the nutritional values of our foods.

Wellness Heat and Massage
fold faq How long will my heat product provide warmth?

The heating time of the heat product depends on the respective individual product.

Heat pillow: for safety reasons, the electric heat pillow shuts off automatically after 100 minutes. To switch the heat pillow back on, first set the on-switch to the “OFF” position and then to the respective temperature.

Heated mattress cover: the electric, heated mattress cover is equipped with a timer, which can be used to set the shut-off time. This saves energy and provides additional safety, as the heated mattress cover is never in operation without supervision. To switch the heated mattress cover back on, first set the on-switch to the “OFF” position and then back to “ON”, then set the desired temperature.

Heated cuddly blanket: the electric heated blanket shuts off automatically after 90 minutes of continuous use. This saves energy and provides additional safety, as the heated blanket is never in operation without supervision. The LED display will flash. To switch the heated blanket back on, first set the controller to the “OFF” position and then to the desired temperature.

Foot warmer: the product switches off automatically after 90 minutes of continuous use. This saves energy and provides additional safety, as the product is never in operation without supervision. To switch the foot warmer back on, first set the on-switch to the “OFF” position and then to the desired temperature.

fold faq Why does my heat device not get properly hot?

Electric heat products have several heat settings, which can be individually set. Even at the maximum heat setting it will take some time until the heat can be felt. Depending on your product, the maximum heat radiance may be achieved after approx. 5 –15 min.

Category: Heat and massage products

To test how warm the heat pillow will get, place the heat pillow around your hand (but while doing so, be sure not to fold the heat pillow!) or warm it under a blanket. Only then will more heat develop and will not escape directly into the environment.Ensure that the heat pillow sits loosely, i.e. some air circulates between it and your skin during use. Accumulation of heat must be prevented.

fold faq Can heat devices be used on children and pets?

Heat devices should not be used on children, pets, or persons that are unable to turn the device off or remove it without help.

fold faq Why should diabetics talk to their doctor before using heat devices?

Diabetics are often afflicted with circulatory problems, limited heat sensitivity, and are at risk for skin irritation. Therefore every diabetic should consult a doctor before using heat devices.

fold faq Why is an electric heat device with a thermostat better than a hot water bottle?

An electric heat device ensures constant, ideal heat and can be adjusted to your individual needs. The hot water bottle, on the other hand, is fairly heavy, very hot at first, and cools off after a certain time.

fold faq Can heat products cause “electric smog”?

The operation of electric devices generates electric and magnetic fields on principle; such fields can also be measured. For Soehnle heat products, however, these are far below the legal limits.
Is it bad when you fall asleep while the Soehnle heat product is switched on?
With Soehnle heat products, an auto-off function ensures that the heat product shuts off after 1.5 or 2.5 hours – depending on the model.
So falling asleep while using the heat product is harmless.
If the Soehnle heat products are to be used continuously for a long period of time, the thermostat must be set to the lowest position.

fold faq Is the use of heat products harmless for persons with electronic implants?

Just as for every electric and electronic product we must warn persons with electronic implants (pacemakers or similar) of the use of heat products. These users should definitely ask their physician prior to use of such devices.

fold faq How quickly will I feel the heat with Soehnle heat products?

This also depends on the specific model and its power. Some Soehnle heat products are equipped with a quick start function and heat up quickly. With heat pillows, however, it may take 5-10 minutes until the full heat is generated, and for heated mattress covers it may take up to 15 minutes.

fold faq How warm can Soehnle heat products get?

The temperature, which a device develops, depends on the respective model and its power.

The heat products are equipped with an integrated temperature control that regulates the temperature automatically and keeps the heat at a constant level.

The temperature of the heat pillow corresponds to the maximum permissible value of the applicable IEC regulation regarding user safety. The device will generate a mild heat that has no harmful effects.

However, we recommend avoiding the maximum temperature level for longer use, as redness of the skin could otherwise be caused. If Soehnle heat products are used continuously over a long period of time, we recommend setting the temperature control to the lowest position.

fold faq Is it possible to cause any harm with Soehnle massage products?

The safety of Soehnle massage products is tested on principle.
The Soehnle hand-held massagers should not be squeezed between the body and a hard object or a wall as this could cause an uncomfortable intensity. Never treat head, joints, spine, and other sensitive body parts.

fold faq Is the use of Soehnle massage products harmless to persons with electronic implants?

Just as for every electric and electronic product we must warn persons with electronic implants (pacemakers or similar) that a consultation with the treating physician is imperative prior to use.

Aroma Diffuser and Humidifier
fold faq Can I mix fragrances?

You can mix all Soehnle fragrance oils as desired to create your own fragrance. But please note that you should not exceed 1 – 3 drops per fresh refill.

fold faq Can I use other fragrance oils in Soehnle Aroma Diffusers and air humidifiers?

In principle, yes. However, Soehnle fragrance oils were specifically developed for this system.

fold faq How much fragrance oil is needed for Soehnle Aroma Diffusers and air humidifiers?

1 - 3 drops of fragrance oil are sufficient for one filling of water.

fold faq How often should Soehnle Aroma Diffusers and air humidifiers be cleaned?

It is best to wipe the container with a cloth after each filling.

fold faq Does it need filtered or distilled water?

Not necessarily. You may use regular tap water.
However, the container should be cleaned with a cloth during each water change, in order to prevent hard water deposits. If you have very hard water, you may notice white hard water deposits on your furnishings and other objects. We therefore recommend using distilled or filtered water.

fold faq Can I place Soehnle Aroma Diffusers and air humidifiers anywhere?

In general, yes. However, delicate furniture or carpets may be damaged. In any case, we recommend placing absorbent material (carpet remnants, rag, cloth, or newspaper) under the device.

fold faq Can I use Soehnle Aroma Diffusers and air humidifiers without fragrance oils?

Of course. The air humidification function and its positive effects will still be maintained.

fold faq Can people perceive “dry” air?

No. Humans do not have a sensory organ that could assess the air moisture independently from other climatic parameters. But the effects of dry air – burning eyes, susceptibility to colds – can be perceived indirectly.

fold faq What causes air to be ”dry” in the winter?

The humidity level is the content of water vapor in the air.
The ability of air to absorb water vapor increases with higher air temperatures. The lower the water vapor content of the air, the dryer the air will be.

fold faq What is relative air humidity?

It is the ratio of water vapor actually contained in the air to the maximum possible volume of water vapor in the air. In other words: it is the ratio of absolute air moisture and the maximum air moisture. Commonly measured in percent.

fold faq What is the effect of aromatizing the air in a room?

The fragrance of a room greatly influences body and mind: it can revive an organism, awaken wonderful memories, or activate creativity. It can also convey a comfortable interior climate and encourages relaxation – in the bathroom as well as in the bedroom or living room.

fold faq Why does air humidification support our wellbeing?

Dry air – caused by heating systems in the winter – can cause uncomfortable symptoms for some people; particularly when the relative air humidity falls below 40 percent. Air humidifiers are a great option to maintain the relative air humidity at an individually comfortable level.
